A data breach affected about 900,000 customers of a leading remittance company in the Philipines, according to the report.
Cebuana Lhuillier admitted that there was a data breach on their email server where a large data is stored.
The information that is at risk of leakage includes the name of the customers, their contact numbers and to some of their clients, information about their business.
However, the remittance company said that the details about the customers’ transactions are still safe and not compromised in spite of the data breach.
Cebuana Lhuillier also assured the public that the security of their main server is still airtight and protected.
The company is now coordinating with the National Privacy Commission for the investigation of the said incident.
Affected customers are urged to change their passwords immediately.
Most overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) rely on the convenience of remittance centers and banks in sending their hard-earned salary to their families to sustain their needs.
Most likely, they avail the services of remittance centers because it is more convenient and accessible. Remittance centers like Cebuana Lhuillier and the likes can be found almost anywhere in the neighborhood.
