Kids especially babies are still very flexible, that’s why it’s so easy for them to sit and lie down in various positions. But that does not mean that we should allow them to do so. Some positions might have a bad side effect on them as they grow. Just like the “W-sitting position”, it is when a child sits on their bottom with their knees bent and feet positioned outside of their hips.
We often see this position in kids and according to one child physiotherapist, this can hinder the development of a child. If a child has hip problems, sitting in the W-position can put strain on the hips and joints and increase the likelihood of dislocation. It also affects leg muscles becoming short and tight, this can then negatively affect their coordination, balance, and the development of gross motor skills down the road.
So once our child reaches 3 years old we need to start telling them to avoid sitting in this position. They might feel comfortable sitting that way as it makes up for weaknesses they may have in their hips and trunk. The added stability of this position allows them to play with toys in an upright sitting position without worrying about falling over.
However, as a parent, it is important to recognize when your child is sitting in the W position and to correct it before it becomes a problem. It is crucial that this should be corrected before the child reaches 6 years old.
